Physiological Changes in the Course of Bulbing and Dormancy - breaking of Gladiolus (Gladiolus gandavensis L.)

Abstract
Changes of ABA, GA and cytokinin-like substances taking place in bulb tissuses of Gladiolus gandavensis L., while the bulbing was going on, and the influence of a low temperature on the dormancy-breaking after the bulbing were assessed. The staining response of the base and growing points of bulbs was tested with TTC. Compendia of the experimental results were as follows:
A negligible quantity of ABA content in the tissues was observed at the beginning time of bulb development, but it was considerably high at the time of the bulb development and the bulb maturity. Cytokinin was also very high at the stage of bulb maturity. GA level, on the contrary, was high at the beginning time of bulb development and maturity, decreased during the stage of bulb development and maturity.
The specific coloration with TTC at the base, growing points and vascular tissues of corm was more conspicuous when the temperature of 5¡É was continued longer, and the dormancy-breaking effect was much more pronounced as the length of the low temperature treatment was longer.
